The 2008 Cape St. Claire Chess Tournament took place on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday (Jan. 21) at the Cape Clubhouse. The event was run by Mr. Gregory Acholonu, a National Chess Master and Cape St. Claire Elementary's chess class instructor. Twelve elementary school students participated. Before the tournament began, Mr. Acholonu gave a brief chess class to the students, demonstrating moves from a renowned chess match to go over player strategy. The tournament then began, and students paired up to play. As games ended, wins & losses were tallied, and the final rankings were determined based on who had the most wins. The tournament lasted about 2.5 hours, with participants playing about 4 or 5 games each. The kids were focused and engaged in the matches and had lots of fun. The top three players were 4th grader Bryce Ziemer (1st), 5th grader Andrew Bunker (2nd) and 3rd Grader Samuel Murphy (3rd). We look forward to starting the spring session of the chess club the first week of February, and another tournament in the Cape next year!
